When you live to be 93 years-old, you’ve likely experienced and accomplished a lot of things. When your name is Dr. Pamela Reeve and you celebrate 93 years on this Earth, the list of experience and accomplishments is simply exceptional!

A Seminary Lounger?

Did you know that because of her dual gifting in architecture and teaching that Dr. Reeve was instrumental in designing the Seminary Building known as Travis-Lovitt Hall? Her heart for community lead to the space with chairs and a fireplace known as the “Seminary Lounge”…or more accurately, the Dr. Pamela Reeve Student Community Lounge – dedicated in her honor on February 1, 2008.

One day, a wise and respected member of the Multnomah community with some knowledge and history under his belt mentioned to us that there used to be “Extension Sites” long ago for Multnomah. Certainly long before MU Reno-Tahoe was established!

I won’t mention any names, but I’ll shamelessly plug his blog here!

This would appear to be a problem since we’re calling Reno-Tahoe our first extension site…so I did some sleuthing (big thanks to Dr. Lockwood for pointing me in the right direction).

Was Reno The First?

Upon further research, we have come up with this general consensus:

Stats

• In the 1950’s and 1960’s, Drs. John Mitchell and Willard Aldrich used to travel to various locations in the Northwest and conduct Bible classes.
• These included at least Puget Sound/Tacoma, Eugene, Spokane, Shasta, and Reno. There may have been others.
• It is true, some expired and others have developed into independent Bible institutes.
• Shasta has become Shasta Bible College and is now accredited by TRACS (the Trans-national Accrediting Association).
• Spokane eventually was taken over by Moody Bible Institute.
• The one in Tacoma/Puget sound became Cascade Bible College and approached us for a merger in the 1990’s. We were not prepared to take it over. Eventually it was absorbed by Antioch Bible Church and merged with their Imago Dei Institute.
• Reno had several incarnations, but never made it until Meadows Bible Institute emerged – which is now MU Reno-Tahoe.

Conclusions

• None of these were ever intended to become extension sites of Multnomah.
• Dr. Mitchell certainly never indicated that he envisioned a network of Multnomah campuses around the Northwest and West.
• He was willing to help others get a work like Multnomah started and then let them develop independently if they desired.
• Therefore, there were no Multnomah School of the Bible extension sites.
• We understand them as good-faith efforts of the early founders to do ministry in other cities, but not to develop extension sites for Multnomah School of the Bible per se.

How’s that for a history lesson? I should write a textbook (*imagine my sarcastic intonation here)!

If you have been following us on twitter you may have caught the announcement of our new Online Application.

Now for a bit of an explanation

At some point in the distant past, MU released its first “online” app. It was awesome. You could pull all the necessary documents into your own home using only the power of the internet. In reality, we were providing what amounted to nothing more than a link to a PDF. But it was so cutting edge, so cool, that we rode that wave of technological magnificence up until yesterday.

On Monday, May 11, 2009 Multnomah University launched a real online application.

You are now able to do the entire process online – application, references, application fee – all real, all online, hence a “real online” application. Bottom line, we want to save you money on stamps. I mean, the price of stamps is a moving target now-a-days and we really don’t want the stress of that financial uncertainty to be the deciding factor that comes between you and a MU Bible education. This is just part of how we here at Multnomah are working hard to make the admissions process faster, easier, and more convenient.

Don’t even get me started on printer ink.

We posted a little bit ago about Roger Porret, our faithful volunteer, when we were writing about tradition. You tend to shape the culture a bit when you have been around as long as he has. We celebrated Roger’s 30th anniversary on Thursday. Roger is a volunteer in the cafeteria at MU and has certainly made an impression.

Roger Porret has had an impact at Multnomah since I was a student. I remember a special chapel when Roger was deputized as the “official” sheriff of Multnomah. His position came with a badge and a bunny blaster. He was thrilled and so was the student body. I was and am thankful to be a part of a school that would take the time to honor a special volunteer like Roger!

We at Multnomah are sure thankful for Roger’s spirit and his service. He sets a mighty good example. Here is to thirty years that Roger helped make great. Congratulations!

In this final of 3 installments that began with (1) Cinco De Mustache, and continued with (2) Great Mustaches of Multnomah Past, you’ll be treated to some of Multnomah’s most notorious beards. As is the case with the venerable mustache, they come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Not everyone can grow a “Grizzly Adams” or “Kenny Rogers“, but not everyone has to.

After a little more digging through Multnomah’s archives, here’s what we found:

Dr. Al Baylis (Seminary Prof)

If there were an award for the longest-standing beard among Multnomah’s faculty, Dr. Baylis would win, hands down (at least as far as we can prove).

Dr. Garry Friesen (College Prof)

Before he wore the mustache featured in the Mustache post, Dr. Friesen had one of the fullest beards on campus for several years.

I’ve dubbed the last photo “Scary Gary.” You do NOT want to turn in his assignments late!

Dr. Philip Johnson (Seminary prof and Librarian)

I’ve always been impressed by Dr. Johnson’s stately goatee.

Through my research, I saw only two (non-consecutive) years during which Dr. Terveen wore a beard, but who’s counting?

Make no mistake, this is an impressively timeless beard!

Notable Mentions

I couldn’t locate any old photos of Dr. Calvin Blom, but he has a beard worthy of tribute.

Dr. Scalberg, who made an appearance on the Mustaches post, astounded me with his wide range of style over the years. While I never found photos of him with a true beard, I found these two “almost” beards.

As you can see from the “then” and “now” photos, some of Multnomah’s historical mustaches don’t strictly reside in the past; some of our distinguished faculty still sport them today. While mustaches do have their place in the history books, growing one is the same, God-given talent it’s always been. All that’s changed is the way they’re worn.
