Say It’s Not So!

Friday, October 31st, 2008

Yes, it’s true. Dr. Don Brake, Dean of Multnomah Biblical Seminary has announced that he is retiring!

We don’t know whether to be happy for him or disappointed for us…

A Word From Dr. Brake

“I have reached the place in life where it is time to turn the leadership of the seminary over to a younger man, to bring new ideas, and to insert enthusiasm into the program,” Dr. Brake said. “It has been a great ride but all good things must come to an end.”

Amber Caught the Bus!

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

Our very own Amber Wilson caught the bus! I won’t even begin to tell you about the shady driving she did to get in this position and take a shot of herself while at the wheel! (Note from the legal department: MU encourages you to chase buses responsibly.)

Here’s the email she sent me:

Well…wouldja looky here!
“Tell her what she’s won, Rob!” (insert crowd cheering…)

Protect Your Password!

Monday, October 27th, 2008

I was notified today by Brenda Gibson, Director of Information Technology (IT), that some folks are getting email “spoofs” from “Multnomah” requesting that they “update” their username and password and personal info…YIKES!

Multnomah University Will NEVER Ask For Your Password

  • Neither will any of the different divisions within the University (College, Seminary, Grad Studies, etc) ever ask for your password.
  • If you get an email asking for your password, notify the IT department immediately at 503.251.6555 or helpdesk@multnomah.edu
  • If you get an email asking for your account password, report it to your email provider and then delete it immediately (please, notify us as well).
  • Do not ever give out your personal information to an email solicitation - ever.

2 Instances Where You’ll “Give” Your Password

  1. You initiate a call to us to have an issue resolved with your password.
  2. You are logging into a service on Multnomah’s Website or Intranet that you use.

A Note From Brenda Gibson In IT

Spammers are using more and more psychological methods to get people to believe the email is legit. “It looks legit (logo, etc)” “it has my name in it”, but no legitimate business - whether it’s Multnomah, a bank, an online business - should ever ask you to provide them with your personal information including your username or passwords.

The Buzz About Mystery Worshippers

Friday, October 24th, 2008

Apparently there is an ever-growing trend for churches to hire “Secret Shoppers” or, to make it more palatable to their congregants, “Mystery Worshippers”…

The Thing
Check out this Wall Street Journal article about it.

Note that the Seminary was well represented at the end by our very own Dr. Paul Louis Metzger. (Well done, Sir.)

“Some theologians warn that mystery-worshipper services will drive ’spiritual consumerism.’ Evaluating churches as if they were restaurants or hotels might encourage people to choose their church not according to its theology, but based on which one has the best lattes or day care,” says Paul Metzger, professor of theology at Multnomah Biblical Seminary in Portland, Ore. “We tend to look for religion or spirituality that will give us what we want, when we want it,” Prof. Metzger says. “There’s a pressure for the church to be something that the church is not.”

The Buzz
The very day this article hit the wires, it was picked up by - amongst others - the Tulsa World and the Arizona Star.

The Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life thought it worthy of their hallowed pages.

Then, bloggers and other online magazines jumped on it. There are too many to list, so I’ve done the Google search for you!

You probably have plenty of thoughts on this…so don’t hold back!

They Caught The Bus Too!

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

A few weeks back our very own Seminary admissions counselor Zach Banker - along with his wife Amanda - took me up on my offer of a free Multnomah T-shirt!

Here’s the email I got from Zach:

We were moseying downtown when we saw the bus on Burnside. It was traveling west and we had just turned east, so we made a left turn off Burnside (Oops! That’s not legal, is it?) into Chinatown to circle back around. When we got back to Burnside the bus had eluded us by turning onto SW 3rd, so we went around the block again to get on 3rd. I was the driver/picture taker, but we missed the picture on the first pass, so we had to come around on it again.  These are the results…

That’s A Big T-shirt
As you can see, that T-shirt fits both of them comfortably.

Question: Why did they get one so big?
Answer: Not only do we care about spouses being close, but we are also running out of sizes! We mostly have smaller shirts now - so send me your photos soon!

Lasting Friendships

Thursday, October 16th, 2008

We see it all the time here. Lasting true friendships. If you’re an alum or “future alum” then you probably know what I’m talking about. There just seems to be a real connection between brothers and sisters who become close while at Multnomah - praise God for that!

An Email to the Alumni Department:

Hello Multnomah Alumni Dept. (that means you Michelle and Farrah!),

Hope y’all are doing well. I always enjoy getting the Multnomah update in my email box. I do hope things are going better for you healthwise Michelle. Please know you have been prayed for today!

Attached is a picture from the Disneyland Half Marathon this past August. I think the picture captures the love between friends…friendships that were made during our Grad Year 2004-2005 and still continue to this day. Toby Yuen and myself (Ed Murphy) did the race, and Brinton and Allison Hinz (who met and were married that Grad year) came out to cheer us on. It was a fun reunion time we had together.

During the months I was training and preparing for the race, I really wasn’t thinking about the race itself but I was more focused on how excited I was to see my friends again. It was a huge blessing for all of us to reconnect that weekend. Although we are not living next door to each other anymore in the single seminary student housing, we still have the friendships that were made while we were part of the Multnomah community. And we still are part of the Multnomah community! :-) These are the people who helped spur me on in my relationship with God during school, and they continue to do so now. I’m thankful for friends, like these and others, that I made while in seminary. I’m thankful that the Lord allowed me the blessing to attend Multnomah.

Anyway, I was just counting my blessings tonight and wanted to share them with you.  God Bless you guys!

Peace!
-Ed-

By the way, as a matter of coincidence…Ed (far left) is also on a bus!

Hopping Homecoming Hotdogs

It was a dollar a dog day when 96 of Multnomah’s alumni came home this past weekend in celebration of Homecoming 2008. All hot dog sales went to help fund STUGO (student government). Kyle Higginbotham won an Ipod Nano.  The day’s activities also included: Soccer, Women’s Volleyball, and the main event of the evening Men’s varsity basketball vs. Alumni and what an exciting game it was. Our alumni gave our varsity team a run for their money. It was neck and neck up until the last 3 minutes of the game with the 1st half ending with Multnomah Alumni: 49 and Multnomah Lions: 51 – our current Lions took the game 101 to 87.

Special thanks

Dr. Norm Cook: Alumnus of the Year 2008

Monday, October 6th, 2008

This year, Multnomah University awarded Dr. Norm Cook as the Honored Alumnus of the year, recognizing him as an alumnus who exemplifies Christ and the mission of Multnomah as demonstrated by his life.

On September 23, a special chapel event was held in his honor, with Dr. Cook’s long-time friend, Bud Schaeffer, making a surprise guest appearance.

Dr. Cook: a missionary to Taiwan for 16 years, to Multnomah Seminarian graduate, to chairman of Multnomah’s Intercultural Studies department for 23 years.

In 2003, Dr. Cook retired. However, he continues counseling, teaching weekend seminars, and speaking at various churches with Mrs. Cook.

“The Alumnus of the Year award is one of the highest honors Multnomah can bestow on an alum, and Dr. Cook is certainly one worthy of such recognition,” Michelle Peel, Multnomah’s director of alumni relations said.

To view more pictures of the event, go to the Alumni Photo Journal.

To read more about Dr. Cook, go here or catch it in the Winter Issue of the Multnomah Magazine.

MU Athletics

A Web Response - www.multnomah.edu/athletics

Lately, we have been pretty excited about our MU Lions and now our website reflects that. This week, in fact, we rolled out our new and improved athletics site. It was time to pump up the design and add a slew of features to allow our faithful (and even reach out to those not so faithful) MU sports fans to get their fill of Lion sports action.

Among the changes you will find:

  • A new graphical layout
  • New photos everywhere
  • Intramural games schedule, score, and standings now have a home
  • Each sport home page includes - upcoming games, recent scores, and team record
  • The Game Log now brings you summaries of all MU games as well as Player of the Game
  • You can now sign up to email or rss updates of The Game Log so you always have the latest news

You should definitely check it out, kick the tires a bit, come back and tell us what you think…

And by all means subscribe! RSS - Email
