The Rainy not Windy City
Dear Family & Friends,
On July 1, I began year 34 at Multnomah Bible College. This CLASSIC Fortnightly from September 10, 2004 remembers how I got here in God’s sovereignty.
Family & Friends,
When I’m asked how I got to Multnomah, I remember that step one was that I was turned down for 25 other positions. But then I interviewed with the highly respected Moody Bible Institute. Immediately after the interview, the dean shocked me by saying, You are hired! I had to fill out a perfunctory form and he would take care of the rest. I did, but heard nothing. Finally, I called Moody and mentioned that the dean seemed very interested in me. The assistant said that my form was one of 40 and I didn’t have a chance. So I swallowed hard and interviewed with Multnomah. I told them what I told the others — In two years there is a very good chance that I’ll be leaving to teach in Nairobi, Kenya with Byang Kato. This news killed most interviews, but Multnomah’s response won my heart. “We expect our students to be open to missions. Why shouldn’t we expect our faculty to be open to missions.” I signed the contract before they changed their minds. A week later Moody and called, said there had been a huge oversight, but they were sending a contract immediately. They said it was the first time they ever hired someone and forgot they hired them!
Thus, I came,
in God’s sovereignty,
not to the windy city,
but to the rainy city,
Garry
