Drug House Dilemma

By Garry Friesen June 22nd, 2009

Dear Family & Friends,

This CLASSIC Friesen Fortnightly from November 16, 2002 has a happy ending.

“Neighbors turn up heat on drug house” (Portland Tribune 11/8/02).  I was studying during all those protest marches in college.  I’m making up for lost time.  Our neighbors organized a march of solidarity up and down our streets.  We have one well-known drug house.   Some of the neighbors have fought its presence for years.  Our visuals said, “We Support a Drug Free Neighborhood”. The audio included a drum, a duck call and “No More Drugs” chanting.   Channel six did a short piece.  If you saw it, I was the pair of knees behind the many signs.  Drug houses are so difficult to close that they often intimidate the neighborhood.  The 25 marchers were standing with everyone who was trying to stop the drug traffic.  I met more neighbors in this morning march than in the whole last year.  Our house, Aslan’s How, is joining these neighbors to fight against what C.S. Lewis & his land of Narnia would call the modern day Mirazs, white witches, and dragons.  I don’t think the battle will be finally won without the Lion Aslan, but I am very pleased to have such courageous neighbors with whom to stand in the battle.

Update: The drug house was closed and the house fixed up.  Tip: when the police cannot help, check with the mortgage company.  If they know it is a drug house and the dealers are behind on payments, they will close it down rather than extend more grace.
